Chromium for diabetes control
By Dr. William Campbell Douglass on 03/23/2011
I’ve got some important news for people facing diabetes.
Scientists have known for decades that a single mineral can deliver the knockout punch to raging blood-sugar levels.
So when’s your doctor going to catch on? Continue reading →
The data on the standards for chromium requirements and the safety of various chromium compounds and doses are reviewed. The 350-fold difference between the acceptable daily intake and the calculated reference dose for humans of 70 mg per day seems without precedent with respect to other nutritional minerals. Chromium is an essential nutrient involved in normal carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. It influences glucose metabolism by potentiating the action as taking part in insulin signal amplification mechanism. A placebo-controlled single blind, prospective study was carried out to investigate the effect of chromium supplementation on blood glucose, HbA(1)C and lipid profile in newly onset patients with type-2 diabetes. Experimental and clinical studies have shown that Pycnogenol (PYC) has significant antidiabetic effects including lowering Hemoglobin A1C and raising Glutathione as well as other important antioxidant enzymes (glutathione-S-transferase, catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase) in the liver. Although this study investigated Pycnogenol from Maritime Pine Bark, Pycnogenol (Proanthocyanidins) from Grape Seed Extract would likely provide similar benefits. Continue reading →
On June 8, 2011 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) called for a new label warning on the popular Cholesterol lowering drug Zocor (Simvastatin) because of an increased risk of muscle damage, kidney failure and death. Continue reading →
Your Supplements are in danger. Please sign this PETITION to keep the FDA from making all nutritional and herbal supplements drugs.
On July 1, 2011, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued proposed guidelines for New Dietary Ingredients (NDI). The FDA wants to turn your supplements into drugs so that they can seize more power and the billions of dollars that come with it. If it had the power, the FDA would treat everything as a drug and require the full drug approval process, no matter what it does for cost or availability.
The FDA already has the power to pull from the market any supplement, if it is unsafe, or does not comply with Good Manufacturing Practices, etc. Continue reading →

One of the most asked questions I hear every day is “What can I do to look younger and slow or stop the aging process?” As much as we all wish we could drink from the fountain of youth and never age, it has unfortunately not been discovered yet, so we have to resort to other means to try to deter the aging process. We cannot stop the hands of time but armed with the knowledge of what causes the visible signs of aging we can do a lot to prevent premature aging.

June 9, 2011 – The US Food and Drug Administration has just alerted healthcare professionals about changes in the labeling of 5-alpha reductase inhibiting drugs (5-ARI). These drugs for Benign Prostate Hypertrophy (BPH), include finasteride (Proscar) and dutasteride (Avodart).
The drug labels must now warn that there is an increased risk of being diagnosed with a high-grade prostate cancer while taking these drugs.

A handful of Pistachio nuts eaten every day has been shown to significantly improve chronic erectile dysfunction in as little as three weeks.
Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is thought to be a sign of cardiovascular disease risk because the same processes needed to maintain an erection – proper circulation and blood vessel relaxation – becomes impaired. Continue reading →
May 24, 2011. Drug-resistant bacteria—“superbugs”—are becoming a global crisis. But the government not only thwarts the development of new antibiotic drugs. It also willfully ignores powerful natural therapies and cures.
Last August, the UN’s World Health Organization issued a global alert on the dangers of drug-resistant bacteria: “Some bacteria have developed mechanisms which render them resistant to many of the antibiotics normally used for their treatment, so pose particular Continue reading →
May 24, 2011. Call it the sledgehammer approach to medicine. Rather than catching or curing disease, aggressive cancer screenings and unnecessary biopsies are actually causing cancer, spreading deadly “superbugs” and killing patients.
There is big money in cancer screenings. Americans spend $4 billion on mammograms alone and some of those tests cause false alarms that lead to unnecessary follow-up surgery on normal breasts—at a cost of as much as $70 billion over a decade. Continue reading →
When it comes to the nuclear-power disaster unfolding in Japan, there clearly is far more to fear than fear itself. But fear is clearly one of the biggest – and could turn out to be the most potent – dangers.
Although radiation escaping from a nuclear power-plant catastrophe can increase the risk for many cancers and other health problems, stress, anxiety and fear ended up in many ways being a much greater long-term threat to health and well-being in Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and other nuclear accidents, nuclear experts said Monday.

Currently, increasing amounts of radiation are escaping from nuclear power plants in Japan that were damaged by the recent 9.0 earthquake that hit Japan on March 10, 2011, and the tsunami that followed. Based on the best scientific information that we have, I do not believe that any significant amount of radiation from these reactors will reach populations the United States. Nevertheless, this points out the real concern that such an event could happen in the U.S.

Recently, a 52 year old woman came to my office complaining of hot flashes, night sweats, moodiness, depression, apathy, fatigue and weight gain in her abdomen. She said, “I just don’t feel like myself anymore. Am I just getting older or is it my hormones?”
In the U.S. approximately 2 million women reach Menopause ever year. The lower a man’s testosterone level, the higher his risk of death – especially death from heart disease.
The finding comes from a study of British men aged 40 to 79 by University of Cambridge gerontologist Kay-Tee Khaw, MBBCh, and colleagues.
“The men with lower testosterone levels had an increased risk of dying from any cause, but most particularly of cardiovascular disease,” Khaw tells WebMD. “We looked at cancer, too, and found no evidence of a link to cancer with higher testosterone levels.”

Researchers in the US and Japan found that those who drank fruit or vegetable juices at least three times a week were 76% less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than those who consumed juice less than once a week.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia among older people, according to the National Institutes of Health. It is marked by the progressive and irreversible decline of certain cognitive functions, including memory, time and space orientation, abstract thinking, the ability make mathematical calculations, language and communication skills, and the performance of routine tasks.

A new study measuring the effects of Green Tea compounds in the blood stream after digestion, confirmed that the compounds show protective effects for dementia, and could play an important role in protecting the body against cancer.
The researchers investigated whether the protective properties of green tea – which have previously been shown to be present in the undigested, fresh herb – were still ‘active’ after the herb had been digested.

Alzheimer’s disease is found in 10% of Americans over the age of 65 and as many as 50% of Americans over the age of 85. It characterized by a build-up of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain and tangled neurofibrils that leads to severely diminished memory and cognitive function.
Curcumin is a potent polyphenolic antioxidant derived from the Curry spice Turmeric that has an extensive history as a food additive and herbal medicine in India where the incidence of Alheimer’s disease appears to be approximately 50% lower than in the United States.

Research now confirms what you already knew-that you can prevent most of today’s chronic degenerative diseases and extend your life by taking a daily multi-vitamin. So, what are you waiting for? Peak Advantage is the only Multi-Vita/Min from which my patients have consistently gotten a boost in energy and sense of well-being.
A recent comprehensive review of vitamin and mineral research by a Harvard Medical School team of physicians, concluded that low vitamin intake has been linked to so many illnesses, that everybody-regardless of age or health status- should start taking a daily multivitamin. The researchers reviewed more than 30 years of English-language articles about vitamins and their relationship to chronic diseases. Their findings were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Lead author of the study, Dr. Robert Fletcher, said, “It’s rare to find a health-promoter that offers such a substantial benefit with a relatively low cost and low risk of problems. And when you have such a thing,” he added, “you ought to jump on it.”
