HPV — Human Papilloma Virus
HPV is a sexually transmitted virus that can cause damage to the cervix, genital warts and cervical cancer. More than 1 out of 4 women in the United States, ages 14 to 59, have been infected with genital HPV. As many as 20-40 million Americans have HPV currently, with 6.2 million new cases occurring every year. This sexually transmitted virus causes invasive cancer of the cervix in an estimated 11,500 women and kills more than 3,500 annually in the U.S.

Should you Amputate your Cervix?
Conventional Medicine knows of no cure for HPV. The only known treatments are all various forms of surgical amputation of the end of the cervix by freezing, burning, or cutting off the end of the cervix. These include Cryotherapy, Laser Surgery, or LEEP procedures. Each procedure cuts off approximately 1/4 inch of the neck of the uterus. The doctor can only hope that he or she cuts off enough of the cervix to get all of the virus, but leave enough so that if the woman wants later to have a baby, there will be enough cervix left to hold the baby in for entire pregnancy. Unfortunately, all of these procedures frequently fail and the virus often comes back within six months prompting more amputations or eventually a total hysterectomy.

Deadly Decision: Should you vaccinate yourself or your daughter with Gardasil?
This vaccine is being marketed by Merck & Co., as a vaccine to prevent Cervical Cancer. The truth is this vaccine does not prevent cancer at all. It is licensed only to prevent 2 of the 30 sexually transmitted types of HPV virus that may cause c

Many experts believe that the adverse reactions to this vaccine are under reported, and not worth the risks since HPV is a preventable disease for which there is a safe and effective non-surgical treatment. Even though severe adverse reactions and deaths linked to the vaccine continue to mount, the FDA continues to claim the benefits outweigh the risks.

The side effects of Gardasil include pain, swelling, itching, bruising, and redness at the injection site, headache, fever, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and fainting, paralysis and death.

Is there a Safe and Effective Natural Non-surgical Treatment for HPV?
Naturopathic Physicians have been treating HPV and abnormal Pap Smears without surgical intervention for decades. Dr. Hansen has personally been treating HPV for 30 years with a natural treatment that appears to totally eradicate the virus in 70-90% of the cases, without invasive surgery and without leaving any trace of HPV DNA on repeat lab testing. Dr. Hansen is the founder of the Hansen Clinic of Natural Medicine and one of the original co-founders of the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, located in Tempe, Arizona. Dr. Hansen says, “Women deserve to know that there is a safe and effective natural alternative to surgery for HPV. My patients insist that I do as much as I can to tell as many women as I can about this life saving non-surgical treatment for HPV and cervical dysplasia.”

HPV Natural Treatment Success Stories
Charlene is a good example of the benefits of this treatment. She was first diagnosed with an abnormal Pap and HPV in 2002. Her OB/Gyn doctor recommended Cryotherapy (freezing), which seemed to work for a time. However, three years later, in 2005, the HPV showed up again along with a precancerous abnormal Pap smear. This time she had severe dysplasia (CIN III – Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia III). Once again she was told that she needed surgery right away and this time she needed a more aggressive procedure, known as Laser “Conization,” which uses a laser to cut a cone shaped section out of the cervix.

Although this procedure removed even more of her cervix than the Cryotherapy had three years earlier, it did not remove the HPV. One year later, the HPV caused the recurrence of more precancerous cells on the cervix. This time Charlene was fortunate to hear from a friend that there was a natural alternative to surgery that was safer, less traumatic and more effective that the conventional procedures.

Charlene’s first visit with Dr. Hansen was in October 2006, when HPV DNA testing found that she had the “High Risk” type of HPV on her cervix that is associated with causing cancer. She was treated in the office with a topical herbal/mineral application directly applied to the cervix twice a week for six weeks, along with specific nutritional, herbal and homeopathic supplements designed to augment her immune system to kill the virus from the inside.

At the end of the natural treatment Charlene’s Pap smear was finally back to normal and the HPV was completely gone! There was absolutely no trace of HPV DNA left on her cervix. Charlene was absolutely elated. She believes that this treatment saved her life without removing her cervix so that she can have children in the future. In the three years since her treatment, repeat Paps and HPV Tests have continued to be normal. Charlene wants to tell all women with HPV to stop getting the barbaric amputations that don’t work and get the natural treatment instead.

How many women have HPV?
Over a typical college career approximately 60% of sexually active women will become infected with HPV and 80% of U.S. women will have been infected by age 50. Although most women have no symptoms, genital HPV is the primary cause of cervical cancer. It tends to develop slowly, without any noticeable symptoms after age 25. Half of all women diagnosed with this cancer are between the ages of 35 and 55. However, approximately 20% of women with cervical cancer are diagnosed when they are over 65. Therefore, it is important for older women to get regular exams to test for cancerous and pre-cancerous changes of the cervix.

Can men get HPV?
It is estimated that 50% of all sexually active men get HPV and give it to women. However, most men who get HPV never get any symptoms or health problems themselves. It does not seem to survive very long unless it is protected by moist mucous membranes like those found in a woman. However, certain types of HPV can cause genital warts in about 1% of sexually active men. Other types can cause genital or anal cancer. The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that about 1,500 men get genital cancer in the U.S. every year.

What is the difference between “High-Risk” and “Low-Risk” HPV?
There are more than 100 different strains or types of HPV. Approximately 30 of these viruses are sexually transmitted, and they can infect the genital area of men and women. There are 14 HPV virus types that are called “high-risk” types. These may cause abnormal Pap tests. They may also lead to cancer of the cervix, vulva, vagina, anus, or penis. There are 11 HPV virus types that are called “low-risk” type because they typically only cause mild Pap test abnormalities or genital warts.

What are Genital Warts? Genital warts are single or multiple growths or bumps caused by HPV that appear in the genital area. Genital warts usually appear as soft, moist, pink, or flesh-colored swellings. They can be raised or flat, single or multiple, small or large, and sometimes cauliflower shaped. They can appear on the vulva, in or around the vagina or anus, on the cervix, and on the penis, scrotum, groin, or thigh. After sexual contact with an infected person, warts may appear within weeks or months, or not at all.

Risk Factors for Developing Cervical Dysplasia or Cervical Cancers

Risk Factor
Increased Risk of Dysplasia or Cancer
•  having sex at an early age (younger than age 18) 2.7 times
•  having many sex partners (more than 3) 3.4 times
•  deficiency of dietary beta-carotene (yellow vegs) 2.8 times
•  smoking (10 or more cigarettes per day) 3.0 times
•  taking Birth Control Pills for more than 5 years 3.6 times
•  having genital warts anytime in the past 3.8 times
•  deficiency of vitamin C (less than 30 mg per day) 6.7 times
•  deficiency of folic acid (less than 400mcg per day) 9.0 times
•  having positive test for HPV confirmed by DNA test 18 times

HPV Testing
The best way to test for HPV is the Digene® HPV Test. This test is the only test approved by the FDA to test for HPV. It uses advanced molecular technology to detect the DNA (genetic material) of 13 high-risk types of HPV, the virus types shown to actually cause virtually all cases of cervical cancer. There are over 100 different types of HPV. About 30 are sexually transmitted and cause genital HPV.

The HPV test is done at the same time as the Pap Smear, so women don’t need to do anything more than ask for it. By combining the HPV Test and Pap Smear, the ability to identify women at risk for cervical cancer is increased to virtually 100 percent. In one study, Digene’s HPV test identified 100% of the women with advanced cervical disease (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia [CIN] grades 2 and 3), compared to only 58 percent identified by the conventional Pap Smear and 84 percent by the newer, “liquid-based” Pap Test.

Most women who become infected with HPV are able to eradicate the virus and suffer no apparent long-term consequences to their health. But a many women develop a persistent infection that can eventually lead to pre-cancerous changes in the cervix.

Women who have normal Pap test results and no HPV infection are at very low risk (0.2%) for developing cervical cancer. Women who have an abnormal Pap test and a positive HPV test are at higher risk (6%-7% or greater) of developing cervical cancer if not treated.

Many doctors do not test for HPV as part of their routine screening because the only treatment that they know is surgery. Therefore they often simply wait until the Pap Smear finds abnormal precancerous or cancerous lesions and then they surgically cut off the end of the cervix.

Dr. Hansen’s Rx for Cervical Dysplasia and HPV
Dr. Hansen recommends that all women over the age of 21 get an annual HPV Test along with a Pap Smear. If you are younger than 21, but have been sexually active for 3 or more years, you should also get an HPV Test along with a Pap Smear annually. If either of these tests are positive you can be treated naturally with nutritional and herbal supplements to eradicate the HPV Virus and restore the cervical cells back to normal within 3 months.

The Naturopathic treatment for Cervical Dysplasia and HPV involves twice weekly in office treatments for 6 weeks, which includes the use of a liquid extract of Sanguinaria root and zinc chloride applied directly to the cervix for 1 minute via a speculum. This topical combination causes a sloughing off of the abnormal cells and the killing of the virus without shortening or harming the cervix. Sanguinaria root extract is one of a very few herbs that can be toxic if swallowed. It is used by naturopathic physicians topically with prudence and care to avoid excessive destruction of the surrounding cells. It is not be relied upon to treat pre-cancerous cells or tumors elsewhere in the body.

In addition to the topical in office application, the patient also takes a combination of nutritional, herbal and homeopathic supplements that enhance the immune system and give the body the essential building blocks that it needs to kill the virus and heal the abnormal cells.

The Healing Power of Nature – Vis medicatrix naturae
Naturopathic physicians understand that it is nature that is the real healer – not doctors, drugs or surgery. Nature cures through the body’s inherent healing mechanisms. When supported it can maintain and restore phenomenal health. Naturopathic physicians seek to support and enhance these natural healing systems by using medicines and techniques that work in harmony with body and are free of harmful side-effects.
